This is a review of a set of three kcup varieties produced by Walmart under the brand “Great Value.”

* Great Value House Blend Coffee Review *

The brew had a great presence and I enjoyed the coffee aroma when leaning close into the cup.  It scores a 5 out of 5 possible points for presentation.

The taste was bold, sharp, and flavorful.  It was fuller for a medium roast, but didn’t have the deep, burned, roasted characteristics of a darker roast.  This cup scored a 5 out of 5 points for taste.

Overall, this really delivers.  It had a fresh-brewed aroma with bold flavors and taste to rival the likes of big-chain, fresh-ground drip roasts such as Starbucks.  The overall score earns a 5 out of 5 points.

* Great Value Toasted Coconut Light Roast Coffee Review *

The aroma of toasted coconut enveloped me as the coffee brewed.  It was a delicious enticement above the normal brews I have been enjoying.  This ranks a 5 out of 5 points in presentation.

I didn’t sense a lot of variety in the flavors, but it had a definite, toasted coconut taste and a medium-light roast character.  The longer I paused between the sips, I enjoyed the lingering aftertaste of coconut remaining.  This roast scores a 4 out of 5 points on taste.

This coffee left a good impression as a light roast variety.  I enjoyed the flavoring, which satisfied a different set of tastebuds, and was a welcome departure from my plain roasted cups.  This scored an overall rating of 5 points of 5.

* Great Value French Vanilla Coffee Review *

The aroma walked up to me from several feet away and punched me in the face, it was so distinctive and overt.  I got the scent of vanilla and it was a pleasant surprise.  The presentation scored 5 out of 5 possible points.

The taste was a full medium-roast profile.  The coffee flavor had a clean aftertaste and I could detect a light vanilla flavor after each sip which didn’t come across as too artificial.  This coffee scored 5 out of 5 possible points for taste.

Overall, this felt like a gourmet treat.  I am not a big fan of flavored coffees because they often eclipse the original coffee flavor but this one negotiated the fine balance between the two elemental flavors.  This cup scores a 5 out of 5 points overall as it has a great presence and also has the taste to back it up.  I liked this one.

For the trio, I was initially concerned that the flavorings would come across as fake or artificial, but they didn’t.  It was pleasant and offered a diversion from my all-coffee blends.  I’m glad I gave the flavored coffees a chance.  The House blend was also a pleasant surprise that I would welcome to the table as an everyday staple at breakfast or mealtimes.

One has to separate out the price, which may be cheaper than other varieties from the taste and performance they deliver because these delivered a surprise surpassing my initial prejudices.  These coffees live up to their brand moniker and represented a “great value” for what I spent.  Finishing the packages of these kcups will be a pleasure.
